Breast Asymmetry Can Predict Breast Cancer Risk

According to research carried out at the University of Liverpool, UK, if a woman has one breast larger than the other she may have a higher risk of developing breast cancer, when compared to a woman whose breasts are symmetrical (same size and shape).

You can read about this latest study in Breast Cancer Research.

According to the report, 'Breast asymmetry can be used as a significant independent predictor' of breast cancer.

The researchers looked at the mammograms of 504 women. Half had developed breast cancer, the other half had not. They discovered that the women who had not developed breast cancer had more symmetrical breasts than those who had developed breast cancer.

The researchers said the symmetry of a woman's breasts should be included in a woman's risk profile.

Doctors have written to blog warning that breast asymmetry can be caused by many factors - having slightly asymmetrical breasts may be completely normal.
